Darlington scholarship program 

The Superior Court Judges of Nevada County are pleased to announce the availability of the John H. Darlington Scholarship award for students planning careers in alcohol and drug abuse counseling. This $1,000.00 scholarship is available annually through a merit-based application process. Each interested applicant is required to write a one-page essay stating why he or she plans a career in alcohol and drug abuse counseling.

Judge Darlington graduated from Loyola Law School in 1970 and began his career as an Assistant Attorney General. In 1972, he became an Assistant District Attorney In 1978, he was elected District Attorney of Nevada County. Governor George Dukemejian appointed him to the Superior Court bench in 1989, and the people of Nevada County re-elect ed him to that position without opposition in 1990, 1996 and 2002. Judge Darlington retired from public service on November 30, 2006.

The Judges of the Nevada County Superior Court established this scholarship in 2007 to honor their colleague. During his years of service, he successfully integrated the Felony Adult Drug Court, and Prop 36 Drug Treatment Courts into the mainstream of justice in Nevada County. His efforts saved numerous lives from the affliction of drug and alcohol addiction, and restored them to productive citizens of Nevada County.

The John H. Darlington Scholarship is funded by contributions from the Judges of the Nevada County Superior Court, through the Judge’s Charitable Fund administered by the Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation. The recipient will be selected by the Judges of the Nevada County Superior Court, in their sole discretion

Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants must be enrolled in a two year or four year college or university program to pursue a degree in Chemical Dependency Studies, or obtain certification as an alcohol and drug abuse counselor.

Applicants must be a resident of Nevada County.

Preference will be given to applicants who have been involved in the alternative courts administered by the Superior Court of Nevada County.

The scholarship award will be paid directly to the educational institution to defray tuition or other direct costs.
